Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder in which the child has difficulty coordinating the complex movements required for speech. The difficulty occurs when the brain is unable to effectively send signals to the mouth. The child often knows what they want to say but has difficulty sequencing the movements between sounds and words. Children with CAS have difficulty saying words consistently and using multisyllabic words. They can also have co-occurring speech errors that are not caused by CAS (e.g. difficulty producing the “r” sound).
Children diagnosed with CAS need a specialized, motor-based approach to therapy and benefit most from therapy that occurs several times per week. Most children with CAS greatly benefit from access to Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC), such as communication boards, books, or an electronic device, as they acquire speech.
