For children to become successful readers, they need to have strong foundational skills for tuning-in and playing with sounds in creative ways. Even before or just as children are starting to read, they should be able to do things like identify rhyming pairs, create their own rhymes, hear the syllables within a word, and hear the first sound of words.
These skills, known as phonological and phonemic awareness, are critical for reading development. Unfortunately, they can also be areas of difficulty for children with speech and/or language disorders who are more likely to go on to have trouble with reading. Children who have a hard time remembering the names and sounds of letters and numbers are also at increased risk of reading difficulty.
It is well known that the earlier children receive support with reading and pre-reading skills the better their outcomes.
